And when you have a basic quiz up and running, there are a whole bunch of possibilities to add more advanced functionality, such as pagination. I go into this at the end of the article. Here, we have functions to build the quiz and show the results. The next thing our quiz needs is some questions to display. Using an array will make the questions easy to iterate over:.
First, we create an output variable to contain all the HTML output including questions and answer choices. Next, we can start building the HTML for each question. Because this is in a forEach loop, we get the current value, the index the position number of the current item in the arrayand the array itself as parameters.
This is so that users will be able to click anywhere on the answer text to select that answer. If the label was omitted, then users would have to click on the radio button itself, which is not very accessible. The join expression takes our list of answers and puts them together in one string that we can output into our answers div.
Now our buildQuiz function is complete. You should be able to run the quiz at this point and see the questions displayed. Please note, however, that the structure of your code is important. At this point, we want to build out our showResults function to loop over the answers, check them, and show the results. But what if the user has left an answer blank? In this case, using.
Now the overall statement says:. The next statements in our answer-checking loop will let us handle correct and incorrect answers. If the answer is wrong or blank, color the answer choices red again, optional. Feel free to add or remove questions and answers and style the quiz however you like. The quiz container will help us position the questions as layers that we can show and hide.
Next, we can use some CSS positioning to make the slides sit as layers on top of one another. As before, order is important, so this the revised structure of our code:. Add these after the call to buildQuizas shown above:. Add this beneath the existing functions buildQuiz and showResults :.The test is not official, it's just a nice way to see how much you know, or don't know, about HTML.
You will get 1 point for each correct answer. At the end of the Quiz, your total score will be displayed. Maximum score is 40 points. Add in some margin and padding, set a background color, center-align the text and transform to uppercase. Next, simply set the font styles for the instructional text. This code should make out instructions at the top look like the text in the screenshot below.
The first thing that we need to code here is our question container. Then set the background color, margin and overflow like you see below.
Next up are the h2 tags. On hover, change the color to a darker gray and make sure the cursor is a pointer. Then add a little margin, set the color and font, and make them uppercase. Finally, we finish by including a basic color transition so that the solution will gradually fade into view when the user clicks.
Everything is coded up and in place, but how do we get the browser to show the right answer when the user clicks? This is where things jump to the experimental side. What the heck is going on here? With that one little piece of code, this thing is now perfectly functional. Try it out by following the link below. Demo: Click here to launch. With a little more trickery, we can. This allows you to specify the order things are highlighted as the user tabs around the page.
If we insert the value -1, we disable the ability of the user to tab to this item. Now, the interesting thing is that when we combine this with the :focus pseudo class, we can actually make the answer stay up after the user clicks. It should stay there until you click elsewhere.
