Bama frogs drone delivery

By Jim Rossman. I can remember receiving a Vertibird for Christmas when I was about 8 years old. It was a small helicopter on the end of a long stick that rotated around a motorized base. It was as close to a remote control helicopter as you could get in the early s. DJI was nice enough to send me the Mavic Mini so I could compare it with the Mavic Air, but I ended up spending a lot more time flying the Mini, so this review will concentrate a bit more on the Mini.

I first became aware of DJI with its Phantom line of quad-rotor drones that began with the Phantom 1 in It has a three-axis stabilized camera with a megapixel sensor. It also has four-direction obstacle avoidance and a six-camera navigation system so it will avoid crashing into things as you fly it at up to 31 miles per hour. This is a rather large drone that uses a wireless control technology called OcuSync HD to allow for a range of up to 4.

The Phantom is a wonderful quad, but its size Mavic is a line of DJI quadsranging from large to small, but they all have a folding arm design to make them easier to pack and carry. The Mavic Pro was followed by the cheaper and smaller Mavic Air in early Now we have the Mavic Miniwhich even cheaper and smaller than the Mavic Air.

The range of the Air using the smartphone as a controller is about feet, while the range with the controller is up to 2. The Air has a maximum speed of The Mavic Air folds up for easy carrying. Extended for flight, the drone measures 6. It weighs less than a pound The Mini weighs in at just 8.

Drones that weigh grams or more must be registered with the FAA. Unfolded, the Mini measures 6. It folds down to 5. Video from both drones looks amazing. The Mini does not have any forward or backward obstacle avoidance. It does have downward obstacle sensing, which will warn you if the drone senses its landing area is not safe. The downward sensing also helps to stabilize hovering. The Mavic Mini has a range of up to 2. I found the controller had trouble keeping the connection to the drone between 1 and 2 miles away in the city, with buildings and trees in the way.

Flying over White Rock Lake allowed for much greater range, and I was able to fly more than two miles out. Legally, you need to maintain a visual line of sight to your drone at all times. This can be challenging with a drone as small as the Mini.

There will be times when you are flying solely via the video screen. Hopefully those times are short. Because the Mavic drones have GPS, they have a feature called Return To Home, which will bring the drone back to you with the push of one button.

The Mavic drones will also return to home if they fly too far away and lose connection to the controller for more than 20 seconds or if the battery level gets critically low. It is amazing to see the drone get buffeted by the wind and still provide video that looks like it was shot with a tripod.

The Mini has three flying modes, Speed the fastest modePosition standard mode and Cinematic, a very slow, deliberate maneuvering mode that is great for getting smooth videos. These drones have sophisticated electronics inside downward vision sensing to make them hover quite easily, especially if you let go of the control sticks.

The DJI app makes taking off and landing as easy as pushing a button. There are two control sticks. If this is your first time registering, please check your inbox for more information about the benefits of your Forbes account and what you can do next!

On this bright June day, something new is about to start; the longest drone test flights in Malawi are about to begin. And while these are final tests β€” a dress rehearsal of sorts β€” the implication of their success is extremely important for the future of humanitarian drones here in Malawi, and across the region. The drone slowly gains altitude, then takes off, making a wide, graceful turn before it flies out of sight.

By car, the drive is a bumpy hour and a half through local villages. The drone takes around 20 to 25 minutes to cover the same distance, depending on winds.

Boko Haram Is Back. With Better Drones.

It gently lands in a soccer field adjacent to the health center, where community health worker Elizabeth Pemba is waiting. The remote location and high prevalence of malaria makes it hard to keep her neighbors healthy. Being able to receive medicine and send samples quickly to the nearby hospital will make all the difference in ensuring that children and families get the care they need.

By car over dirt roads, the trip from the airstrip in Kasungo to Lifupa health center is a bumpy hour and a half. By drone, it's a quick 20 to 25 minutes. Using drones to deliver medicine and vaccines will be a game changer.

As part of the Supply Chain team, Dubin and his colleagues have been working to scale up drone technology to make it easier for health care workers like Pemba to support their communities. The goal β€” as Dubin explains β€” is to have drones be a regular conduit for health facilities, starting with HIV samples and treatment, and expanding from there. The combination of high HIV rates and challenging infrastructure make drones an ideal tool to support our program work.

A medical supply delivery drone takes off near the Lifupa health center in central Malawi in June In all of our work at the corridor, we want it to be practical and replicate real-life applications, like delivery of medical supplies or a mapping mission to identify flood-prone areas or mosquito breeding sites. Back in Lifupa, after just a few minutes on the ground β€” enough time to offload and reload cargo and confirm safety protocols β€” the drone buzzes to life again.

Children playing soccer nearby stop to watch before it takes off again. It heads back to the Kasungu airstrip to complete the longest two-way cargo flights in Malawi to date, around 47 miles total. That's what our democracy demands. Congress also needs to act, Obama said. He called on lawmakers to loosen restrictions on moving Gitmo prisoners to the United States, approve more money for security of U. Congressional Republicans challenged Obama's analysis of the struggle against al- Qaeda. John McCain, R-Ariz. McCain also said that he and others would work with Obama to find "common ground" for "both our counterterrorism objectives and our highest values as a nation of laws.

The president spent much of his speech on two counterterrorism projects that have drawn sharp attacks from civil libertarians, drone strikes and the Guantanamo Bay prison. Under a new set of rules, Obama said drone attacks will be confined to suspects " who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people," and who cannot otherwise be captured. The speech came a day after the Obama administration revealed that drone strikes have killed four Americans, all terrorist suspects, in counterterrorism operations since Obama defended the strike that killed American-born Anwar al-Awlaki, calling him a terrorist leader who "was continually trying to kill people.

Obama also defended drone strikes in general, saying they "have saved lives" by eliminating terrorists, and are a legal part of a "just war" against terrorist organizations. There have been civilian casualties that "haunt" him and his chain of command, Obama said, but that risk must be balanced against the threat from terrorist groups that are specifically targeting civilians. The president also stressed that members of Congress have been apprised of every drone strike and that he is open to the possibility of some sort of independent oversight, such as a special court or a review panel.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which has criticized some of Obama's anti-terrorism actions, said the president sounded good notes on drones and Gitmo during his speech, but has to follow through. Obama " is right to say that we cannot be on a war footing forever," said Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU.

In describing his plans to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, Obama said he is lifting his own moratorium of transferring detainees to Yemen. He also said a new senior envoy will be appointed to talk with other nations about taking in prisoners.

There are currently detainees at Gitmo. Obama had pledged to close the facility during his first year in office. But his efforts ran afoul of congressional Republicans who opposed trials of terrorism suspects in the United States, and of other countries that refused to take some prisoners.

Some detainees at the prison, meanwhile, are in the midst of a hunger strike, protesting their conditions. In his speech, Obama called on Congress to lift some of those restrictions, and to establish a facility in the United States for detention and military trials of some Gitmo suspects. Obama won applause from the crowd when he said, "T here is no justification beyond politics for Congress to prevent us from closing a facility that should never have been opened.

The Gitmo and drone discussions also drew the shouts of at least one protester, forcing Obama at one point to say: "Let me finish. Obama later said the woman's protests reflected the fact that "these are tough issues. GOP members of Congress said U. Ed Royce, R-Calif. The president's call to increase the security budget for facilities overseas stems from the Sept. Congressional Republicans are investigating the Obama administration over Benghazi, claiming officials tried to cover up the involvement of a terrorist organization and were unprepared for such an attack.

Obama also urged Congress to approve a federal "shield law" that would help reporters protect confidential sources.

The proposal comes amid news of a Justice Department seizure of records from the Associated Press and Fox News in connection with investigations of news leaks. Obama said he respects the need for investigative journalism because it helps hold government accountable. He also said the government has to strike a balance between press freedom and the need to protect sensitive national security information.

In the meantime, Obama said he asked Attorney General Eric Holder to review the Justice Department guidelines on investigations that involve reporters.

Holder is scheduled to report back to the president by July Although Obama did not call predecessor George W. Bush by name, he did criticize some Bush counterterrorism proposals, including treatment of detainees and what he called "torture.

The threat of terrorism still exists, Obama said, citing Benghazi, the April bombings at the Boston Marathon and the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas. But the nature of the threat has changed sincehe said. The village of Konduga, which hosts a camp for tens of thousands of people fleeing the war with Boko Haram, was struck by a suicide bombing in mid-June that killed 30 people.

By Dionne Searcey. A fresh scar stretched lengthwise down his stomach β€” the result of a suicide bombing by Boko Haram in June that sent shrapnel tearing through his belly. A half dozen other boys crowded around him and pulled up their shirts. All bore similar scars from the attack. President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler, was re-elected earlier this year after boasting about his progress battling Boko Harm.

A full decade into the war, however, Boko Haram militants are still roaming the countryside with impunity. Their fighters now have more sophisticated drones than the military and are well-armed after successful raids on military brigades, according to local politicians and security analysts. Militants control four of the 10 zones in northern Borno State, near Lake Chad, according to security analysts and a federal official. They are pulling off almost-daily attacksincluding opening fire last week on the convoy of the governor of Borno State.

The attack on June 17 that wounded Abdul and his friends his last name is being withheld to protect him from reprisals also killed 30 people β€” eight of them children. By many accounts, the Nigerian military is demoralized and on the defensive. Their weapons and vehicles have fallen into disrepair.

He is the eighth commander in 10 years. The garrison towns are ringed by trenches to slow militant invasions, but the pullback has allowed Boko Haram fighters free rein in the barren countryside. Inside the super camp in Bama on a recent afternoon, a camouflaged tank lurched down the street, blue smoke pouring from its underside, its tracks looking like loose teeth about to fall out.

It was piloted by helmetless soldiers with open shirts and a gunner wearing a crown of leaves, who plowed into a parked minivan partially blocking the road, smashing the vehicle.

Major Ak Karma, sitting behind his desk nearby at the Bama super camp headquarters, said that a Boko Haram attack there had been thwarted days earlier, but downplayed the threat.

The war with Boko Haram has devastated the population in rural northeast Nigeria, one of the poorest regions on earth. More than two million people have fled their homes, tens of thousands have been killed and many more injured, abducted and conscripted to join the fight.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said this week that nearly 22, Nigerians have been reported missing during the crisis.

Only a few years ago, the situation looked more hopeful. Inafter President Buhari was first elected, the Nigerian military made huge headway beating back Boko Haram. They ousted fighters from Maiduguri, the state capital, and from small cities that Boko Haram had taken over, tracking them to their forest hide-outs. President Buhari announced plans to airlift Nigerian citizens out of South Africa, where Nigerians were attacked in a spate of xenophobic violence.

Military commanders, faced with complaints that their strategy is old and ineffectual, say that the super camps are a new, more effective way of dealing with an insurgency that is now able to pull off more complicated attacks against the military. But some officials call the super camps an outright retreat.

One federal official, who asked not to be identified out of fear that criticizing the military would jeopardize his safety, said that soldiers were merely barricading themselves inside super camps. The official said that Boko Haram fighters are raiding the gear the soldiers are leaving behind as they abandon their posts for the super camps.Obama said he took full responsibility for the operation and apologized to the families of the hostages.

The two Western hostages β€” one American, one Italian β€” were killed during a drone strike that targeted members of al-Qaeda, the White House said.

They were Warren Weinstein, 73, an aid worker from Maryland who was a contractor for the U. The White House said the counterterrorism operation, and another this year in the same region, also killed two other Americans believed to be working with al-Qaeda. In an extraordinary eight-minute statement to reporters, a solemn Obama halted at points during his brief remarks, looking down at notes.

Obama said he spoke to Weinstein's widow, Elaine, on Wednesday. She released a statement Thursday saying she "did not yet fully understand" what happened and looked forward to the results of the government investigation. In a video released by al-Qaeda inWeinstein pleaded for Obama to negotiate his release, saying he felt "totally abandoned and forgotten" by the U. Elaine Weinstein also complained that the assistance from the U.

The bodies of Weinstein and Lo Porto have not been recovered, said a U. The White House said the government will provide compensation to the two families. Weinstein family's had worked with Maryland's congressional delegation in an effort to free him. Ben Cardin, D-Md. The Senate Intelligence Committee was already investigating the incident, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

In a statement, Renzi expressed "deep sorrow" for the incident and lamented "a tragic error by our American allies. Obama did not describe the nature or exact location of the operation. The site of the attack had been under surveillance for hundreds of hours, and that surveillance was "near-continuous" in the days just before the attack, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. The spying used a variety of methods, including drone imagery, and discovered a known al-Qaeda operative driving into the compound, said U.

Based on that intelligence, Earnest said, intelligence analysts concluded with "near certainty" that al-Qaeda leaders were present and that civilians were not. The American Civil Liberties Union, which has been critical of the use of drone strikes, said the revelations raise troubling questions about the intelligence used by the government to justify the strikes. Obama said he has ordered a full investigation and will declassify information about the operation because "the Weinstein and Lo Porto families deserve to know the truth.

Earnest also said two other Americans who were working with al-Qaeda were killed in counterterrorism operations. Ahmed Farouq, an American who was an al-Qaeda leader, was killed in the same operation that resulted in the deaths of Weinstein and Lo Porto, Earnest said.

Another American who had joined al-Qaeda, Adam Gadahn, was also killed in a separate operation in January. Earnest said Gadahn was not the specific target of that strike. Gadahn, 36, served as an interpreter and spokesman for al Qaeda and was indicted by a federal grand jury in California for treason in Earnest would not say if the attack would have gone forward had intelligence officials known that U. Obama did not specifically sign off on the two operations, he said.

In a speech at the National Defense University, Obama said he believed it was unconstitutional to target American citizens with drone strikes unless they were "actively plotting to kill U.

The White House has ordered a review of drone practices to prevent future targeting of civilians, but Earnest indicated that such strikes will continue to be part of the U. It would pose an even higher risk to local civilian populations than some of the more narrowly tailored counter-terrorism operations that we carry out that don't involve putting boots on the ground.

Seventy-seven customers in Reno, Nev. All 77 flights were from one store to a dozen select customers who live within a mile of the shop. The 7-Eleven drone delivery service, on the other hand, is in Reno, a populated urban and suburban area, which poses a potentially more complex set of challenges. Deliveries were completed, on average, less than ten minutes after the order was placed, according to a statement from Flirtey.

All the deliveries happened within the line of sight of the drone pilot, but the drones flew autonomously.

But in October, NASA and the FAA conducted tests in Reno to research a low-altitude air traffic control system that would track and record drone flights without the pilot watching the drone in the air the entire time. Project Wing completed its first U. But that was a one-off trial, not a run of 77 drone deliveries over a month, like the Flirtey and 7-Eleven collaboration.

The French postal service is beginning an experimental drone delivery program to deliver parcels on a nine mile route once a week. After the program gets approval from the French aviation regulatory authority, the federal postal service will be the first to ever use drone delivery on a regular route.

The drones used in the French postal service experiment have the capacity to fly up to 12 miles carrying about two pounds maximum, going around 19 miles per hour. They are also equipped with parachutes for safe emergency landing in case something disrupts the flight.

The eventual goal is to reach rural or mountainous regions that are otherwise difficult and expensive to get to using cars. The DPDgroup had been working on this program with Atechsys, a French drone company, since in the south of France. With the testing phase now over, the experimentation phase is all set to begin. And in America, the U. Postal service took a survey to determine how people would feel about drones delivering packages to their homes.

It turned out that more people were into the idea than against it. Delivery by drone appears like it may happen faster than I thought.

My fear remains: delivery of bombs by drone. Disclaimer: The content on this site is provided as general information only and should not be taken as investment advice.
